About Us
Teachers for Vietnam was established in 2006 to help meet the rapidly growing need for native speakers of English to teach the language in Vietnamese colleges and universities. As Vietnam has developed economically in recent years and expanded its trade ties, attaining fluency in English has become an important national priority. Teachers for Vietnam establishes ties with various institutions of higher learning and then finds teachers in the United States to fill teaching positions in ESL at these colleges and universities.
Teachers for Vietnam matches recruited teachers with appropriate university-level positions and offers them an introduction to teaching ESL as well as a country orientation before they leave for Vietnam to take up their teaching duties.
Teachers for Vietnam solicits funds from individuals, foundations, and community organizations to cover the costs of the travel fellowships it offers to recruited teachers. These stipends cover transportation to and from Vietnam from the United States, as well as within Southeast Asia.
Mission Statement
Teachers for Vietnam promotes Vietnam’s development by sponsoring teachers of English at the university level. By supporting these teachers, we also seek to improve relations between the peoples of the United States and Vietnam.
Currently, there are few native speakers of English teaching in Vietnamese universities, and this situation impedes the acquisition of fluency in English as a Second Language (ESL). Students aspiring to careers in business, trade, communications, government service, tourism, and other fields require a command of oral and written English. Teachers recruited by Teachers for Vietnam are helping to meet this need.
By sending American teachers to Vietnam, Teachers for Vietnam is also increasing understanding and strengthening ties between the United States and Vietnam. Teachers who spend a year or more at a Vietnamese college or university undergo life-transforming experiences as they learn about the history, culture, and people of Vietnam. They also make enduring friendships, in and outside the classroom. At the same time, their students come to know Americans personally and to appreciate their values and way of life.
Teachers for Vietnam currently has teachers of ESL at several institutions of higher learning at Can Tho and An Giang universities in the Mekong Delta as well as Dalat in the Central Highlands. Teachers for Vietnam contributes financial support in the form of travel stipends, which supplement subsistence salaries and free housing provided by the host institutions. Teachers for Vietnam provides additional financial resources needed to recruit teachers for these positions.
